Vikings finish strong in 10-6 win at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. – With six and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter Saturday, Augustana trailed Elmhurst by a score of 4-2. However, the Vikings tallied the final three goals of the first half and outscored their hosts 5-2 after intermission to claim a 10-6 win at Langhorst Field. Coach Dan Torie's club won its sixth straight game and 10th in its last 11 outings to improve to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in the CCIW. The Bluejays dropped to 4-10 on the year and 0-3 in the league.
 
Elmhurst's Matt Westhaver opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 8:50 mark of the first quarter. Augustana freshman Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) tied it, converting a Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) assist with just 36 seconds left in the period. However, Dan Curley scored for the Bluejays just seven seconds before the horn and Elmhurst led 2-1 after one.
 
Tyler Dailey and Westhaver sandwiched Bluejay goals around one by Brady Welvaert (Holmen HS, Holmen, Wis.) and the hosts led 4-2 just past the midway point of the second quarter. Goals by junior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) and senior Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) tied it at four and Gallo scored with 3:39 left in the half to give Augustana a 5-4 lead at the break.
 
Five different Vikings scored in the second half, as the visitors pulled away. Davis scored his second of the afternoon off an assist from senior Taylor McGinnis (New Trier HS, Kenilworth, Ill.) and Gallo parlayed a Hawkins helper on a man advantage into his third goal of the day.
 
Senior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) recorded 13 saves in goal to improve to 10-5 on the year. Gallo scored three times and Davis twice while Hawkins and sophomore Cam MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) each had a goal and an assist. Welvaert led Augustana with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) collected five ground balls. Senior Jerrell Collymore (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) won nine of 14 faceoffs.
 
On Wednesday, April 27, the Vikings host a showdown with Illinois Wesleyan at Thorson-Lucken Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
