Senior Alex Crescenti had six goals, six ground balls and three caused turnovers Wednesday in
Augustana's 17-8 win over Beloit at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior
Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) scored six goals Wednesday to lead Augustana to a 17-8 win over Beloit at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings won their fifth consecutive game to improve to 9-5 on the year. The Buccaneers dropped to 4-9.
Augustana's
Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and Beloit's Dylan Levine each scored an unassisted goal in the game's first six minutes and the teams were tied 1-1 midway through the first quarter. Crescenti found the goal for the first time at the 6:21 mark, starting a flurry of five straight Viking goals to end the period.
Kevin Gleason's
(Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) unassisted goal with 43 seconds left put the hosts up 6-1 after one.
Crescenti sandwich a pair of tallies around one from junior
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) to start the second quarter, as Augustana extended the lead to 9-1. However, Beloit answered with three straight of its own to get within 9-4 four minutes before halftime. Davis scored off a Hawkins feed and Crescenti converted a Gleason assist in the last 1:18 of the period and the Vikings took an 11-4 advantage to intermission.
Gleason and Davis opened the second half with goals, but Beloit responded by scoring four of the game's next five and trailed 14-8 going to the final period.
Augustana tallied the only three goals of the fourth quarter. Freshman Lee Whorwell
(York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and junior
Brady Welvaert (Holmen HS, Holmen, Wis.) each scored without the benefit of an assist early in the period before Crescenti parlayed a
Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) helper into the contest's final goal with 10:44 to play.
In addition to Crescenti's half dozen goals, he had six ground balls and shared the team lead in caused turnovers with Hawkins and goalie
Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.). Each had three.
Davis added three goals and Hawkins, Gleason and Whorwell two apiece. Hawkins, Gleason and junior
Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) led the way with two assists each. Senior
Jerrell Collymore (Homewood-Flossmoor,HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) won 16 of 23 faceoffs and corralled a game-high eight grounds balls. Welvaert had seven ground balls.
Peters made eight saves to improve to 9-5 in goal.
The Vikings jump back into CCIW play on Saturday, April 23, traveling to Elmhurst, Illinois to face the Elmhurst Bluejays in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
