Defense leads Vikings to 8-3 win at Capital

Junior Olivia Mayer led Augustana with four goals Saturday, as the Vikings won 8-3 at Capital.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) scored four goals and the Augustana defense shut out Capital in the second half Saturday as the Vikings defeated Capital 8-3 at Bernlohr Stadium. Coach Meredith Newman's squad improved to 9-1 on the season, while the host Crusaders fell to 5-3.
 
Mayer got the Vikings on the board with an unassisted goal just over a minute in. Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) assisted on a Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) goal at the 26:02 mark of the first half and added one of her own at 24:18 to put Augustana up 3-0. Two minutes later, Capital's Kim Hoerauf trimmed the deficit to 3-1 off an assist from Victoria Husain.
 
After seven scoreless minutes, Crusader Kara Hines scored to get her team within a goal, but Mayer answered a minute later to make it 4-2. With 12:47 left in the half, MaKenna Ozenghar drew the hosts within 4-3 on a free position goal, but Mayer scored the final two goals of the half, both on free position attempts, including one with six seconds left.
 
The second stanza was quiet offensively, with each team getting off just five shots. The Vikings scored the only two goals of the period. Mayer assisted on a Quinn Foley (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) goal with 18:10 to play and Hopkins worked an Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) assist into a score with 3:41 left.
 
Senior Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) led Augustana with three caused turnovers, while Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) had three ground balls and three draw controls.
 
Sophomore Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) went the first half in goal and picked up her ninth win without a loss. Senior Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) worked the second 30 minutes and recorded three saves.
 
The Vikings open CCIW play at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, April 9. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
