WHEATON, Ill. – Kelly Thornton drove in seven runs and Christina Sandstedt six Saturday and Katie Thornton started and picked up the win in each game as Wheaton defeated Augustana 11-1 and 17-1 in a doubleheader at Ruth Leedy Field. The Vikings dropped to 10-14 on the year, while the Thunder improved to 16-4 overall. The twin bill was the CCIW opener for both teams.
 
WHEATON 11, AUGUSTANA 1
 
Zayne Blumberg's (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) solo home run in the fourth inning was the highlight for the Vikings in the opener. Wheaton hammered five round-trippers in an 11-1 win.
 
Kelly Thornton and Sandstedt started the bottom of the second with back-to-back home runs and Alyssa Leonard added a two-run shot later in the inning as the Thunder went up 4-0.
 
Sandstedt's three-run blast in the third made it 7-0 and Kelly Thornton had a three-run homer in a four-run fourth.
 
Senior Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) went the distance for Augustana and dropped to 6-8 on the year. Katie Thornton allowed three hits in five innings for Wheaton and improved to 10-3 on the year.
 
Junior Brittany Kellett (The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands, Texas) and freshman Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) had the Vikings' other two hits.
 
WHEATON 17, AUGUSTANA 1
 
Sandstedt and both Thorntons each went 3-for-4 in the nightcap as the Thunder hammered out 20 hits.
 
Wheaton took the lead with seven runs in the top of the second inning. Katie Thornton had a two-run double.
 
Sandstedt had a two-run single in a five-run Thunder fourth and Julia Arthur a two-run single in a five-run fifth.
 
Katie Thornton held the Augustana hitless for the first three innings before exiting. She earned her 11th win in 14 decisions. Senior Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) went the distance for the Vikings and took the loss, falling to 2-2.
 
Ashley Anderson and Ashley Klauss (Trinity HS, Chicago, Ill.) had Augustana's only two hits in the contest.
