Vikings hammer Concordia-Chicago 24-2

Sophomore John Danko scored four goals Saturday in Augustana's 24-2 win at Concordia-Chicago.

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Sophomore John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) and freshman Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) each scored four goals Saturday, as Augustana defeated Concordia-Chicago 24-2 at Concordia Stadium. Coach Dan Torie's Vikings improved to 5-5 on the year, while the Cougars dropped to 1-8.
 
Concordia was able to hold Augustana in check early, but freshman Adam Borgetti's (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) third goal of the season put the Vikings on top four minutes in. Two minutes later, senior Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) scored off an assist from classmate Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Ill.) to make it 2-0. Augustana led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter after Crescenti scored off a Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) assist with nine seconds left in the period.
 
Junior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) scored three times and Whorwell twice in the second quarter as the visitors added eight goals for a 13-1 halftime lead. Jordan Loeffler got the Cougars on the board with 5:36 left in the half.
 
Sophomore Cam MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) scored twice in the third, which ended with Augustana on top 17-2.
 
Danko and Whorwell each scored two of Augustana's seven goals in the fourth quarter.
 
Hawkins and MacKenzie scored three goals each and Crescenti and senior Kyle Doner (Peak to Peak Academy, Erie, Colo.) added two apiece. Davis dished out three assists and Borgetti had a pair. Sophomore McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won 14 of 18 faceoffs.
 
Senior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) played the first half in goal, making three saves. He got the win to improve to 5-5 this year. Freshman Jeremiah Heredia (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) and sophomore Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) each worked a quarter.
 
The Vikings hosts Aurora at Thorson-Lucken Field on Wednesday, April 6 at 4:00 p.m.
