Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) got Augustana on the board officially with an assist from freshman
Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.). Hopkins added consecutive goals and the Vikings led 3-0 with nine minutes gone.
The advantage reached 5-0 before Dubuque's Kelly Wetherald scored with the Spartans a player up at the 15:27 mark of the first half.
Hopkins answered with the help of a
Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) assist and Augustana added three more goals in succession to go up 9-1 with 8:55 left in the half. Wetherald scored with 4:24 left and the teams went to the break with the Vikings leading 9-2.
Hopkins parlayed an
Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) assist into a goal with just 36 seconds gone in the second half before Dubuque sandwiched goals by Bridget Schirmer and Wetherald around one by Augustana's
Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.). The Vikings' lead was 11-4 with 19½ minutes remaining.
Nolan scored again with 19:24 to play, starting a string of eight straight Augustana goals to end the game. Hopkins, Nolan and Cosman each had two of those eight goals.
Hopkins finished the night with a half dozen goals and three assists. Handrahan had a goal and a team-high four assists and Nolan scored four times and controlled 17 draws—equaling the second-highest total in program history. Cosman had three goals and three assists. The hosts finished with advantages of 33-10 in shots and 27-24 in ground balls. They committed 26 turnovers and were 18 of 25 in clear attempts. The Spartans had 29 turnovers and converted 17 of 27 clears.
The Vikings host CCIW co-leader Carthage (8-3, 2-0) this Saturday at Thorson-Lucken Field. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
