Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) scored four of his school-record nine goals during an 8-0 Augustana start Wednesday and the Vikings went on to defeat Benedictine 20-7 at the Sports Complex. Although he saw his own mark for goals fall, senior
Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) tied school records for points (10) and assists (five) in a game. Coach
Dan Torie's squad earned its first win after four setbacks and handed the Eagles their first loss in three contests this year.
Crescenti gave the visitors the lead with his sixth goal of the season at the 11:49 mark of the first quarter. Gleason provided the assist.
That opened the flood gates, with Augustana finding the net seven more times in the next 10 and a half minutes. Crescenti scored three more goals and Gleason and freshman
Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) added two each and it was 8-0 with 1:20 left in the first quarter. Benedictine capitalized on a man advantage to get on the board with a Blake Keenan goal and Tony DePinto's tally with 13 seconds left made it 8-2 Vikings after one.
The Gleason-to-Crescenti combination clicked twice more to open the second quarter and by halftime, Augustana led 14-5. Gleason, senior
Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and junior
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) each found the net before Crescenti scored his seventh goal of the half 3:08 before intermission.
The lead continued to grow in the second half, as the Vikings never allowed their hosts to put together consecutive goals after the two at the end of the first quarter. Gleason, Crescenti and Davis scored in the third quarter to give Augustana a 17-5 advantage. Eagle Corbin Gett's goal made it 17-6 before Gleason closed the period with his fifth goal of the night.
Crescenti broke Gleason's record with his ninth goal at the 14:00 minute mark of the fourth. Senior
Jerrell Collymore (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) scored to make it 20-6 before Benedictine's David Blanco closed the scoring with 1:36 remaining.
In addition to big nights for Crescenti and Gleason (five goals and five assists), Collymore scored his first career goal, won 22 of 30 faceoffs and led the Vikings with nine ground balls. Sophomore
Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) collected half a dozen ground balls and led Augustana with two caused turnovers. Hawkins and Gallo had a pair of assists each.
Senior
Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) went 53 minutes in goal and recorded eight saves to earn his first win of the year.
The Vikings put 32 of their 58 shots on goal compared to 18 of 30 for the Eagles. Augustana also led in ground balls 39-27, won 23 of 31 faceoffs and was perfect on three man-up opportunities. The Vikings killed four of five Benedictine power plays. Each team committed 14 turnovers.
