Senior Alexander Crescenti scored twice Saturday, but Augustana fell 9-6
to Concordia in Mequon, Wisconsin.MEQUON, Wis. – Host Concordia scored six straight goals in the second half Saturday to come from behind for a 9-6 win over Augustana at Fitting Field. The Vikings fell to 0-4 on the year, while the Falcons improved to 2-1.
Senior
Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) scored the first goal of the third quarter to put Augustana up 5-3, but Matt Garvey's answer barely a minute later started a string of six consecutive Concordia goals. After 12 scoreless minutes in the third, the Vikings still led 5-4, but Garvey scored again with 1:09 left in the period and Eric Carrolan converted a Zachary Foster assist for the go-ahead goal just three seconds before the third-quarter buzzer.
Stephen Gregory made it 7-5 with a goal early in the fourth and the teams went nearly eight more scoreless minutes before a Marino Best goal with 5:31 to play put the Falcons up by three. Aidan Connolly scored a minute and a half later and Augustana junior
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) recorded the game's final tally with 3:12 on the clock.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Mark Wilson and Garvey scored for Concordia, but freshman
Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Hawkins, respectively, answered for Augustana.
Senior
Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) gave the Vikings their first lead, scoring on a man advantage in the first minute of the second quarter with an assist from classmate
Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.). After Gregory tied it, Crescenti scored 1:08 before halftime to put Augustana up 4-3 at intermission.
Senior
Jack Peters recorded nine saves in goal for the Vikings. Sophomores
Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) and
Hayden Holland (Owatonna HS, Owatonna, Minn.) led the team with three ground balls each and Zielinksi's two caused turnovers were an Augustana high. Falcon goalkeeper Garrett Wohlford made 14 saves and earned the win.
The Vikings had a 31-29 advantage in shots, while Concordia led in ground balls 27-19.
Augustana is back in action on Wednesday, March 9, traveling to Lisle, Illinois to face Benedictine at 7:00 p.m.
