a doubleheader at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Three Washington University runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one keyed a 4-2, 6-2 doubleheader sweep of Augustana by the Bears Friday at Kelly Field. The Vikings dropped to 7-3 on the season, while Washington improved to 6-2. Coach
Greg Wallace's club returns to Florida for four games, starting on St. Patrick's Day.
WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY 4, AUGUSTANA 2 The Bears put together a two-out, three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to win game one.
After the Vikings took a 2-1 lead on a
John Swiderski's
(Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) two-run single in the top of the sixth, Augustana starter
Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the frame to maintain the lead.
Sophomore right-hander
Mitch Malone (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.) came on to start the Washington seventh. He retired the first two batters, but Kyle Kozak and Austin Darmawan followed with singles to left. A Viking error loaded the bases and Ben Browdy cleared them with a double down the right field line, putting the hosts up 4-2.
Bears' starter Sean Clarke (2-0) retired the last 10 batters he faced to earn the complete-game victory. He gave up just four hits, walked one and fanned three. Malone dropped his first decision of the year, although all three runs he allowed were unearned. White went the first six innings and gave up one run on three hits.
WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY 6, AUGUSTANA 2 In game two, Washington became the first outfit to get to Augustana's
Zach Morgenstern (Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) after the Viking right-hander's two dominant starts in Florida. The Bears chipped away with single runs in the first, third and fourth before knocking Morgenstern out with two in the fifth.
Augustana had taken the lead on Swiderski's first-inning RBI single. Swiderski also had a double in the sixth, when the Vikings scored their other run on a
Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) sacrifice fly, trimming their deficit to 5-2.
However, Augustana was unable to get any closer, leaving two runners stranded in the seventh and ninth and leaving another in scoring position in the eighth. Washington tacked on an unearned run in the seventh to go up 6-2.
Swiderski and freshman
Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) each had three of the Vikings' 10 hits. Morgenstern suffered his first loss in three decisions, allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings. He walked four and fanned four. Senior lefty
Chris Sauer (Rock Canyon HS, Littleton, Colo.) went the final 3 2/3, allowing just an unearned run with no walks and four strikeouts.
Starter Brad Margolin (2-1) got the win and Darmawan had three hits for the Bears.
