ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) and senior Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) combined for 11 goals Saturday as Augustana won its 2016 home opener 23-3 over Aurora at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Meredith Neman's Vikings improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Spartans fell to 1-4.

Senior Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) got the hosts on the board with her fourth goal of the season at 28:39 of the first half. Aurora's Andrea Colford answered 45 seconds later to tie the contest. Chloe Madison was credited with the assist.

Hopkins scored twice in the next four minutes—getting assists from seniors Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.)—to start a string of nine consecutive Augustana goals. Hopkins and Handrahan each had three goals in the run, with Pollard, junior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) and senior Quinn Foley (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) each adding a tally. Foley's goal made it 10-1 Vikings just past the midway point of the first half.

Madison scored off a free position shot to stem the tide temporarily, but Hopkins' fourth goal of the game was the first of six straight for Augustana to close the half. Mayer scored just before the halftime buzzer to put the Vikings up 16-2 at intermission.

Maduro's third goal of the afternoon opened the second half and Hopkins and Handrahan had two goals apiece in the final 10 minutes.

Handrahan finished with five goals and a team-high four assists for nine points—equaling the seventh-highest single-game total in school history. Hopkins scored six goals with a pair of assists. Maduro scored three times and Pollard and Mayer twice each. Pollard also had three assists and freshman Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) dished out two.

Senior Nellie Bubb (Holy Family Catholic HS, Excelsior, Minn.) had team highs of four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) controlled 14 draws—the second-highest total in program history.

Sophomores Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Madalynne Russell (Noblesville HS, Noblesville, Ind.) split time in goal for Newman. Fowler surrendered two goals and made two saves in the first half, while Russell gave up one score and stopped one shot in the second thirty minutes.
