Augustana blasts MSOE 17-6 in 2016 home opener

Junior Jared Hawkins led Augustana with five goals Saturday as the Vikings won their 2016
home opener 17-6 over Milwaukee School of Engineering.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) scored five goals and a trio of Vikings added three apiece Saturday as Augustana won its 2016 home opener 17-6 over Milwaukee School of Engineering at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Dan Torie's squad won its second straight to improve to 2-4 on the year. The game was the season opener for the Raiders.
 
Four different Vikings scored as the hosts took a 4-0 lead after one period. Hawkins started the scoring, getting an assist from senior Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) to tally his fourth goal of the season five and a half minutes in. Gleason's 10th of the year made it 2-0 with five minutes left in the period and seniors Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) added goals in the final four minutes. Augustana shared the ball effectively, getting first-quarter assists from Crescenti and freshman Nick Gallo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.), in addition to another by Gleason.
 
Gleason added a goal and two more assists in the second and Hawkins scored twice more, as the Vikings took an 8-1 lead to intermission. MSOE's Thomas Reid got his team on the board with an assist from Clay Gustafson.
 
Hawkins sandwich a pair of goals around two by Crescenti and another by Gleason in the third quarter as Augustana extended its lead to 13-1. After an Oliver Kennedy goal for the Raiders, freshman Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) scored off an assist from classmate Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) to make it 14-2 after three.
 
Sophomore Nick Zieleinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) opened the fourth with a goal and Whorwell added two more, before MSOE tallied the final four scores against Torie's deep subs.
 
In addition to Hawkins' five, Gleason, Crescenti and Whorwell each had three goals. Gleason also dished out a game-high four assists. Freshman Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) led the Vikings with five caused turnovers. Sophomore McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won 12 of 13 faceoffs and junior Brady Welvaert (Holmen HS, Holmen, Wis.) had a game-high five ground balls. Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) went the first three quarters in goal to earn the win. Reid scored three times for the Raiders.
 
Augustana finished the afternoon with a 54-15 advantage in shots and a 42-24 edge in ground balls. The Vikings won 20 of 26 faceoffs as well.
 
Torie's club will try to extend its winning streak to three games on Wednesday, March 16 against Cornell in Mount Vernon, Iowa. That contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
