Vikings drop 14-5 decision at Colorado College

Senior Jack Peters recorded 19 saves Saturday--tied for second-most in program history--but 
Augustana fell 14-5 at Colorado College.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado College's Robert Stern scored five goals Saturday to lead the Tigers to a 14-5 win over Augustana at Washburn Field. Coach Dan Torie's Vikings dropped to 0-2 on the year heading into a game on Monday, February 29 at Colorado-Mesa. The team's two losses have come to programs which are a combined 7-0 this season. Colorado College improved to 4-0.
 
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes, with the second score coming from Stern. Sophomore John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) answered for Augustana with 5:03 to play in the first quarter, scoring a power play goal with an assist from senior Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.). Parker Woo's goal gave the hosts a 3-1 lead after one period.
 
Davis' second goal of the season, off an assist from sophomore Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.), cut the deficit to 3-2 less than a minute into the second quarter. Austin Davie scored back-to-back goals for Colorado College before senior Kevin Gleason's (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) unassisted goal drew the Vikings to within 5-3 8:42 before halftime. However, Stern scored 25 seconds later and the Tigers tallied two more in the period, including another Davie goal with 24 seconds left in the half, to lead 8-3 at the break.
 
Senior Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) scored twice in the third quarter off assists from Gleason and senior Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.), but Augustana trailed 10-5 after three periods. The hosts added four goals in the fourth, including Stern's fifth of the day, to account for the final.
 
Colorado College outshot the Vikings 57-20 and had a 39-26 advantage in ground balls. The Tigers also won 14 of 21 faceoffs and were successful on 16 of 18 clear attempts. Augustana committed 21 turnovers to a dozen for Colorado College.
 
Viking senior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) recorded 19 saves in goal. He's posted the sixth and second-highest single-game save totals in program history in Augustana's first two games this season. He also led the Vikings with seven ground balls Saturday.
