Augustana falls 2-1 at Millikin

Saturday, but Augustana dropped a 2-1 decision at Millikin.

DECATUR, Ill. – Millikin scored twice in a span of four minutes in the first half of Saturday's match with Augustana and held on for a 2-1 win at Lindsay Stadium. The Vikings fell to 4-11-1 on the year and 0-5-1 in the CCIW, while the Big Blue bumped its mark to 8-5-2 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
 
Augustana just missed taking the lead in the 16th minute. Off a corner by senior Rahul Bhatia (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), freshman Michael Peters' (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) shot hit the crossbar, keeping the contest scoreless.
 
Trey Knighton got the hosts on the board in the 32nd minute. Using an assist from Ben Spelman, Knighton  tallied his fifth goal of the year to give his side a 1-0 lead.
 
In the 36th minute, Ivan Lopez—who had checked in just five minutes earlier—scored his fourth goal of the season to put Millikin up 2-0. Viking keeper Corey Mankins (Marysville HS, Marysville, Ohio) recorded three saves in the final seven minutes of the half to keep the deficit at two goals heading to intermission.
 
Freshman Matthew Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) cut the margin in half with his fourth goal of the season in the 71st minute.
 
An Allen attempt in the 72nd minute was turned away by Big Blue keeper Trevor Creek and the Vikings' final shot, by sophomore Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.), sailed high in the 76th minute.
 
Millikin finished with advantages of 12-6 in shots and 5-4 in corners. The Big Blue put eight attempts on frame to two for Augustana. Mankins was credited with six saves for the Vikings.
 
Coach Mick Regan's squad will be back in action on Wednesday, October 26 at Thorson-Lucken Field. Illinois Wesleyan will be the opponent with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
