2-1 overtime loss at Wheaton Wednesday.

WHEATON, Ill.  – Wheaton's Morgan Whitman beat the Augustana defense to a cross from Anna Saunders and scored her second goal of the season Wednesday, lifting the Thunder to a 2-1 overtime win over the Vikings at Joe Bean Stadium. Augustana fell to 7-7 on the year and 1-4 in the CCIW, while Wheaton improved to 8-7 overall and stayed atop the league standings at 5-1.

After a scoreless first half, Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute. The goal was her team-leading fifth of the season and came off an assist from junior Mady Huber (Legacy HS, Broomfield, Colo.).

The hosts got the equalizer in the 75th minute. Augustana was unable to clear Whitman's cross from the right side, with the ball eluding a diving Bailey Bradford (Deerfield HS, Riverwoods, Ill.). Sarah Van Wingerden was credited with her first goal of the season on the play.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the final 15 minutes, but neither could capitalize, sending the match to overtime.

Just a minute and a half into the extra session, Saunders struck a cross on the ground from the left side. Sprinting down the middle, Whitman got to it before the Viking defense and put it in the back of the net for the game winner.

The Thunder enjoyed a 16-6 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in attempts put on frame. Wheaton took six corners to three for Augustana. Bradford made six saves and Wheaton keeper Kathryn McGregor two.

Coach Scott Mejia's squad is back in action on Saturday, October 22. The Vikings visit Decatur, Illinois to face Millikin in a 4:30 p.m. match.
