Brazinski’s two goals help keep Vikings perfect at home

Senior Michael Brazinski scored his ninth and tenth goals of the season Saturday to lift
Augustana to a 2-1 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) scored twice in the final 32 minutes of the match Saturday as Augustana came from behind to claim the Viking-Warhawk Cup with a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Mick Regan's club won for the fourth time in as many outings at home and improved to 4-5-1 overall this year. UW-Whitewater dropped to 6-3-2.
 
The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute. Dylan Hottsmith scored his sixth goal of the season with an assist from Alex Whiteman. The Warhawks continued to be the aggressors, piling up an 8-1 advantage in shots through the first 34 minutes and finishing the half with 9-3 margin.
 
Augustana keeper Corey Mankins (Marysville HS, Marysville, Ohio) made five saves in the first half to help keep his side within striking distance.
 
The hosts tied it with their first shot of the second half. Brazinski used an assist from freshman Michael Peters (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) to score the equalizer in the 59th minute.
 
In the 80th minute, the same combination teamed up to give the Vikings the lead. The goal was Brazinski's team-leading 10th of the season and Peters' third assist of the year tied him with Brazinski and senior Rahul Bhatia (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) for the team lead.
 
Augustana survived four more Whitewater shot attempts in the final 10 minutes. Mankins recorded his ninth and final save of the night on a shot by Hottsmith in the 82nd minute.
 
The Warhawks finished with a 21-8 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. They took four corners to two for Augustana.
 
Brazinski's big night gives him six goals and 15 points in the last three matches.
 
On Tuesday, October 4, Regan's bunch will hit the road to face the Monmouth Scots. Kickoff in Monmouth, Illinois is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
