Freshman Jack McKearnan fights off a Central player in Augustana's 1-0 loss to the Dutch
Tuesday at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Central's Bryce Leonard put a free kick from just outside the box inside the right upright for the match's only goal Tuesday, giving the Dutch a 1-0 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The loss drops the Vikings to 1-2-0 on the year, while Central improves to 2-2-0.

Leonard's goal came in the 21st minute and on just the second shot of the contest. Calvin Bill's header off a Leonard corner in the 11th minute sailed wide.

Augustana's first two shot attempts, by Jonathan Colucci (Glenbard North Carol Stream, Ill.) and Dominick Sullivan (Plainfield East HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) came late in the first half. Both were stopped by Dutch keeper Josh Carpenter, whose team had a 4-2 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The Vikings picked up the pace after halftime, getting off six shots in the first seven minutes. Three went wide, two were blocked and Carpenter made a save on Shonari Phillips' (Tindley HS, Indianapolis, Ind.) header.

In the 68th minute, Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) made a nice move on the left side, but Carpenter made the save on his shot as well. Colucci had an opportunity in the 83rd minute, but his blast sailed high. The hosts' last gasp came on a Colucci header in the 88th minute, on which Carpenter recorded his fifth and final save of the evening.

Augustana finished with advantages of 11-9 in shots and 6-3 in corners. The Vikings also put five of their shots on goal, compared to just two for the Dutch.

Coach Mick Regan's squad travels to Plymouth, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 12 to take on Lakeland in a 3:00 p.m. match.
