ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – 25th-ranked Augustana improved to 8-2 on the season with a 2-0 win over Illinois Institute of Technology Tuesday at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Scarlet Hawks dropped to 4-4-2 with the loss.
 
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when sophomore Sammi Farkos (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) scored off an assist from junior Brianne Frys (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.). The Vikings took that lead to the halftime break, outshooting IIT 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
 
Augustana got off another eight shots in the first 30 minutes of the second half, but couldn't find the net. Scarlet Hawk keeper Roxanne Myers made saves on back-to-back attempts by freshman Andria Serra (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) in the 64th minute.
 
In the 79th minute, freshman Karleen Gomez (Grayslake Central HS, Hainesville, Ill.) scored off a Farkos assist, breaking a 58-minute scoreless drought and providing the Vikings with a much-needed insurance goal.
 
IIT's best opportunities of the evening came off the foot of Kristen Robinson. Her shot in the 72nd minute went barely wide right and her long blast in the 87th minute was saved by Augustana keeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.).
 
The Vikings finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corners. Myers recorded eight saves, while Chew was credited with two.
 
Coach Scott Mejia's club is back in action on October 3, opening CCIW play at 8th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. That match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
