Brianne Frys (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) corner in the second minute.
Augustana went scoreless for almost 30 minutes, despite getting off 18 shots during that time. Senior
Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) took advantage of an assist from freshman
Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) to break the drought in the 31st minute with her first goal of the season.
The Vikings tacked on two more goals before halftime. Sophomore
Jodie Kirschner (St. Joseph HS, St. Joseph, Mich.) scored off a
Karleen Gomez (Grayslake Central HS, Hainesville, Ill.) assist in the 39th minute and Frys scored an unassisted goal in the 44th.
Early in the second half, Cornell's Diedre Franzen scored on a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 4-1. It was the Rams' only shot of the match and came in the 49th minute.
Franzen's goal stemmed the tide only temporarily, though. Senior
Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) scored back-to-back goals, her first two of the season. The first came off a
Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.) assist in the 53rd minute and the second, in the 68th minute, was aided by Frys' second assist of the match.
Farell's second goal of the night and fifth of the season made the score 7-1 in the 70th minute. Sophomores
Caitlan Lange (South Elgin HS, Bartlett, Ill.) and
Mady Huber (Legacy HS, Broomfield, Colo.) were both credited with assists on the play.
Freshmen
Melette DeVore (Kennedy HS, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and
Natalie DeBartolomeis (Mullen HS, Lone Tree, Colo.) wrapped up the scoring with goals in the 87th and 89th minutes, respectively. Classmate
Emily Mueller (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) assisted on DeVore's goal, while DeBartolomeis' came on a rebound after Cornell keeper Emily Whitfield had stopped a Sundberg attempt.
The hosts finished with a 54-1 edge in shots and a 9-0 advantage in corners. Whitney recorded 15 saves for the Rams.
Augustana is back in action on Sunday, September 13, traveling to St. Louis, Missouri to take on Webster in a 1:00 p.m. match.
