Tournament.ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Cameron Braun's goal with 58 second remaining provided the margin of victory Wednesday as Albion defeated Augustana 13-12 at Thorson-Lucken Field in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Britons advance to the second round with a record of 13-5, while the Vikings' season comes to an end at 14-5.
Augustana trailed 12-9 as the clock ticked near eight minutes, but got a goal from
Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) off an assist from sophomore
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) to draw within two scores. Albion turned it over on its next possession and Gleason picked up the ground ball and scored with 7:00 to play to make it 12-11. A
Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) save on the ensuing Briton possession led to a
Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) breakout and the senior beat Albion goalkeeper Kyle Formanczyk for the tying goal.
Formanczyk came back to make a key play at the 2:00 mark, forcing a Viking turnover which eventually led to Braun's game-winner with 58 seconds left off an Alexander Dziewit assist.
Augustana scored just 13 seconds in when senior
Jeremy Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) scooped up an extended loose ball off the opening faceoff and beat Formanczyk for a 1-0 Viking lead. Goals by
Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and
Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) put the hosts up 3-1, before the Britons scored four straight to end the first quarter. The first three of those came from Zach Hubbell, with Tim Urso's goal making it 5-3 Albion after one period.
Albion tallied two of the first three goals in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead, but Augustana responded with consecutive goals by Bryk, Gleason and sophomore J.P Palasek
(Montini Catholic HS, Wheaton, Ill.) to go in at the half tied 7-7.
The teams traded a pair of goals each in the third period, before Joe Braley gave the Britons a 10-9 lead with the final goal of the quarter. They extended the advantage to 12-9 when Urso and Kyle DeCamp scored the first the first two goals of the fourth.
Albion finished with a 59-30 edge in shots, and put 31 of its attempts on goal to 21 for the Vikings. The Britons also led 39-21 in ground balls, were perfect in 14 clear attempts and won 18 of 28 faceoffs.
Gleason finished with four goals and Bryk had three. Hawkins dished out two assists. Gottardo had a team-high four ground balls and Peters recorded 18 saves, tied for the third-most in program history.
