Vikings fall to Carthage in championship match of CCIW men's tennis tournament

Senior Lawrence Palmer won his match at number one singles over 
Pawel Jaworski of Carthage in the CCIW men's tennis championship 
by a score of 3-6; 6-4; 6-3. The Vikings fell to the Red Men 5-2 to finish
second in the CCIW tournament.

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Augustana men's tennis team came up short in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament's championship match on Saturday, May 2 in Kenosha, Wisconsin at the Smeds Tennis Center. Head coach Jon Miedema's Vikings fell to league champion Carthage in the title match by a score of 5-2.
 
One day earlier Augustana battled past Wheaton 5-4 to advance to the championship match but on Saturday the Red Men proved to be too much.
 
The Vikings fell behind 2-1 after the doubles with sophomore Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and junior Austin Schoeck (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) picking up the lone win. It came at number three over Ryan Jump and Alex Ferruzzi by a narrow 9-8 margin.
 
At number one the freshman team of Samuel Totten (Normal University HS, Normal, Ill.) and Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.)  lost to Pawel Jaworski and Jordan Verbauwhede 8-3. Senior Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and junior Harald Olsson (Hersby Gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden) dropped an 8-1 decision to Alex Boomgarden and Chris Conley at number two.
 
Palmer won at number one over Jaworski by a score of 3-6; 6-4; 6-3 for Augustana's second point in the match.
 
Pohl lost to Jump 2-6; 2-6 at number three and junior Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) fell to Verbauwhede 2-6; 6-2; 3-6 while Schoeck lost to Ferruzzi at number six 2-6; 7-5; 0-6.
 
The matches at numbers two and five went unfinished as the final outcome was determined when the score got to 5-2.
 
At number two Totten was tied with Boomgarden 6-4; 0-6; 5-5 while Woolf was trailing Conley 1-6; 6-4; 2-5 at number five.
 
Augustana finished the year with a 13-12 overall record.
