Big third quarter helps Vikings claim CCIW Tournament title

Sophomore Jared Hawkins scored three goals in Augustana's third-quarter outburst Saturday,
as the Vikings won the CCIW Tournament with a 10-9 victory at Carthage.

KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana rallied from an early 4-1 deficit, outscored Carthage 6-0 in the third quarter, and hung on for a 10-9 win Saturday in the CCIW Tournament championship game at Art Keller Field. Coach Kyle Hart's squad improved to 14-4 on the season, while the regular season champ Red Men dropped to 16-4.
 
Four different Red Men scored as the hosts took a 4-1 lead after one period. Freshman Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) tallied the Vikings lone goal of the quarter.
 
Junior Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) started Augustana's comeback, scoring a pair of unassisted goals early in the second quarter. Junior Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) scored with 9:02 to play before halftime to get the Vikings even at 4-4. Tanner Thomas' goal at the 4:55 mark allowed Carthage to take a 5-4 lead into the locker room.
 
Gleason tied it with his third goal of the game early in the third and with 6:08 left in the period, sophomore J.P. Palasek (Montini Catholic HS, Wheaton, Ill.) gave Augustana its first lead at 6-5 with an unassisted goal.
 
At the 5:55 mark, the Red Men had the tying goal waved off when Remy Giacotto's crosse was deemed illegal. Viking sophomore Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) took advantage, scoring two goals during the three-minute unreleasable penalty. Augustana added man-up goals by Zielinski and Hawkins later in the quarter and led 10-5 after three.
 
A John Salerno goal and back-to-back scores by Dylan Harris got Carthage to within 10-8 with 48 seconds left. Nine seconds later, Harris assisted on Timothy Francis' goal to make it a one-score game.
 
Freshman McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) came up big on the ensuing faceoff, winning it from Giacotto, the first team All-CCIW face off man. Junior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) came up with his 12th save on one final Red Men shot with three seconds left.
 
Hawkins and Gleason each scored three times and Zielinski twice for Hart's team. Senior Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was credited with the Vikings' only assist. Senior Jeremy Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) collected a team-high six ground balls, with Haley and Bryk snaring four each. Potter won eight of 13 faceoffs.
 
Augustana ended up with a 29-28 advantage in shots, while Carthage led in ground balls, 30-26.
