Senior Danny Fifer hit two homers in the opener Saturday to help Augustana earn a
doubleheader sweep at Millikin.DECATUR, Ill. – Senior
Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) homered twice and junior
Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) spun a three-hit complete game in a 7-1 game-one win Saturday at Millikin. The bottom of Augustana's order fueled a 7-3 game-two victory to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Vikings finish the year with a 26-14 overall mark and 10-11 in the CCIW. The Big Blue finishes 16-22 on the year and 7-14 in the league.
AUGUSTANA 7, MILLIKIN 1 White surrendered Millikin's only run in the bottom of the first on Seth Coffey's one-out home run. However, his teammates came right back to get him three runs in the top of the second. Senior
Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) knocked in the tying run with an infield hit and junior
Alex Fluehr (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) the go-ahead run with a single to center. Senior
Brandon Jasper's
(Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) single to right plated the final run of the frame.
In the third, Fifer led off with an infield hit and eventually scored on
Trace Gingerich's
(Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) fielder's choice grounder. A
Tommy Kiriakopoulos (Huntley HS, Lake in the Hills, Ill.) leadoff double and a Jasper sacrifice fly produced a run in the fourth and Fifer's leadoff round-tripper in the fifth put the Vikings up 6-1.
Fifer led off the seventh with his second long ball to account for the final score.
White was outstanding, going the distance and allowing just three hits, walking three and fanning a dozen.
Fifer was 3-for-4 with three runs score and two driven in to lead the offense. Jasper, Gingerich, Fluehr and sophomore
Mitchel Ruh (Hinckley-Big Rock HS, Big Rock, Ill.) each had two hits and Jasper knocked in two runs.
AUGUSTANA 7, MILLIKIN 3 The lower half of Coach
Greg Wallace's order carried Augustana in a 7-3 nightcap win. Senior
Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.), Camalick, Ruh and Fluehr combined for eight hits, five runs scored and four RBI.
Kevin Hodgman (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) scattered eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the win and improve to 4-3 on the year. Freshman
Brad Dubow (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) went the final 3 2/3 innings and fanned five to earn his first career save.
Lenihan's one-out walk sparked a two-run second inning for the visitors. Camalik, Ruh and Fluehr followed with consecutive singles. Ruh's scored Lenihan and Fluehr's plated Camalick.
Augustana plated one run each in the third and fifth to go up 4-0. Junior
Nathan Gray (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) led off both innings—reaching on an error in the third and doubling to right center in the fifth—and scored both runs.
Millikin got to Hodgman for a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the senior right-hander coaxed an inning-ending groundout to leave the bases loaded. The Big Blue knocked the Viking starter out with another run in the sixth, but Dubow came out of the pen to get the last two outs of the frame and keep the score at 4-2. One of them came when junior catcher
John Swiderski (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) cut down Michael Guddendorf attempting to steal.
Lenihan started another big inning in the eighth with a single through the left side. Camalick followed with a single to center and the two moved to second and third on a Ruh sacrifice. Fluehr delivered a two-run double and came around to score the final run on a Jasper ground out.
The Big Blue scratched out a run off Dubow in the eighth, but he recorded three of the final four outs via the strikeout.
An interesting moment occurred in the Viking eighth, when the school's all-time (pitching) strikeout leader, senior
Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Denver, Colo.), pinch hit for Fifer, who finished his career Saturday as Augustana's all-time leading hitter (.414). Davis promptly singled to center for his first career hit and exited for a pinch-runner.
Camalick finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored in his final game. Fluehr was 2-for-5 with three knocked in. Ruh also had two hits.
