The 20th-ranked Vikings are now 16-7-1 on the season and 2-2 in the CCIW. The Big Blue is 11-13 overall and 1-3 in the league.
AUGUSTANA 8, MILLIKIN 7 (8) Millikin drew first blood in the opener on Alyssa Voegele's first-inning, two-run homer. However, freshman pitcher
Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) helped her own cause, driving in junior
Emily Rasche (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) with Augustana's first run on a second-inning sacrifice fly.
After junior
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) knocked in junior
Taylor Ambrozi (Moline HS., Moline, Ill.) with the tying run in the third, Grandt gave herself a 5-2 lead with a three-run homer, her second long ball of the season.
The Big Blue scored four in the fifth to take the lead. Nicole Koch led off with a single. A Viking error and an Alyssa Visvardis double plated a run and knocked out Grandt in favor of senior
Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.). She retired two Millikin batters and walked one before Alexis Dockins touched her for a two-run double to tie it. The Big Blue plated the go-ahead run via a bases-loaded walk.
Ambrozi's two-out, two-run single in the sixth scored senior
Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and freshman
Jordan Arndt (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) to regain the lead for Augustana. Millikin answered in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out solo home run by Dockins that sent the game to extra innings.
Lavin led off the eighth with a walk, moved to second on junior
Jordan Marshall's
(Galesburg HS, St. Augustana, Ill.) sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. Teson's sacrifice fly to center delivered her with the go-ahead run.
Wiersema set the Big Blue down in order in the bottom of the eighth to lock up her second win against one loss this season. Lavin and Rasche each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Grandt drove in four and Ambrozi a pair.
MILLIKIN 6, AUGUSTANA 0 Millikin's Heather Doyle handcuffed the Vikings in the nightcap, allowing just three singles and five total base runners in a complete game shutout.
Augustana's best scoring opportunity came in the second, when sophomore
Allie Bettenhausen (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) singled and Lavin walked. Doyle was able to retire the next two batters to get out of the inning, though.
Voegele put the Big Blue on top with a three-run homer in the third. A Dockins solo shot in the fourth made it 4-0 and and another Voegele blast in the fifth gave Millikin a 5-0 lead. The Big Blue added an unearned run in the frame as well.
Teson and junior
Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) accounted for the only other Viking hits. Augustana starter
Ashley Anderson gave up seven hits and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, taking her third loss against six wins. She walked one and fanned seven. Freshman
Alaina Hofmann (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) finished up with 2 1/3 hitless innings.
