Vikings roll past Elmhurst and into CCIW tournament final

Sophomore Anne Hopkins scored four goals and had two assists on Wednesday, April
29 as Augustana beat Elmhurst 19-2 in CCIW tournament action at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana got four goals apiece from senior Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Anne Hopkins (Mother McCauley HS, Chicago, Ill.) and routed Elmhurst 19-2 in semi-final action of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on Wednesday, 29 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings jumped out to a 13-2 halftime lead and were never headed en route to moving their record to 17-1 overall.
 
After going scoreless for the first three minutes of the game, Augustana got on the board when Kargl scored at 26:57 off an assist from Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.). Kargl then assisted on the next two goals, which were by junior Kaylee Nolan (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and junior Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.). Kargl scored the game's fourth goal with an assist by Handrahan at 24:49.
 
Sophomore Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) scored at 24:47 with Hopkins getting an assist to make it 5-0 and then Hopkins scored two straight unassisted goals to push the margin to 7-0. Maduro's goal at 16:04 off a feed from Kargl made it 8-0 with 16:04 left before halftime.
 
Elmhurst got on the board at 12:45 when Phoebe LeRoy tallied off a free-position shot to cut the margin to 8-1.
 
Hopkins sandwiched a pair of goals at 12:38 and 7:50 around a goal by senior Emily Pavlik (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) at 9:28 to start the running clock with the score at 11-1. Junior Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.) and senior Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) scored near the end of the first half to make it 13-1.
 
Aja Brown got the second, and final goal for the Bluejays when she scored with just :29 left before intermission to make it 13-2 at halftime.
 
The Vikings scored six goals in the final half to account for the final.
 
Augustana held huge statistical advantages in the game, posting a 37-6 lead in shots and a 22-10 margin in ground balls. The Vikings also won 14 of 20 draw controls and only allowed Elmhurst five of 18 clear attempts.
 
Handrahan led the team in ground balls with three and Mayer won four draw controls.
 
Augustana will now face Carthage, a 17-7 winner over North Central in the other semi-final, on Saturday, May 2 for the championship game of the CCIW tournament. Game time at Thorson-Lucken Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
