Vikings drop pair at Elmhurst

Sophomore shortstop Ashley Klauss had four hits in Augustana's double header loss
at Elmhurst on Wednesday, April 15.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Elmhurst handed Augustana two defeats in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball action on Wednesday, April 15 at Stadium at Ballpark in Rosemont, Illinois. The Vikings dropped the first game 5-4 when Elmhurst scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and then fell 3-1 in the nightcap.
 
With the two losses Augustana falls to 20-9-1 overall and 4-4 in the CCIW while Elmhurst moves to 17-9 and 3-3. The Vikings will host Wheaton in a CCIW double header on Saturday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m.
 
GAME 1 – ELMHURST 5, AUGUSTANA 4
 
After Augustana put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead, the Bluejays scored one in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to claim the victory. Junior Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) absorbed the loss for Augustana, her first decision of the year. She came on in relief of freshman Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) in the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Vikings trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning when junior Emily Rasche (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) reached on a walk and went to second when senior Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice. A single to left by junior Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) scored Rasche and pushed Teson to third. Freshman Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) tripled home Teson and Anderson to give Augustana a 3-2 lead. Blumberg came home on a double by senior Laura Behnke.
 
Augustana missed a golden opportunity to put more runs on the board in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded.
 
The Vikings only managed six hits against a pair of Elmhurst pitchers.
 
GAME 2 – ELMHURST 3, AUGUSTANA 1
 
Elmhurst scored a single run in the first and two in the third and fought off an Augustana rally in the bottom of the fifth (the Vikings were the home team per CCIW rules for game two) to come away with a 3-1 win.
 
Trailing 3-0 heading into the fifth, Augustana managed one run when sophomore shortstop Ashley Klauss (Trinity HS, Chicago, Ill.) singled home senior Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.). The Vikings left the bases loaded and were unable to mount another serious threat.
 
Klauss had three of Augustana's eight hits in the game and sophomore Brittany Kellett (The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands, Tex.) collected two.
