dropped a 12-11 overtime decision at Colorado College.COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For a while Friday it looked as though the Augustana women's lacrosse team might pull off its second come-from-behind overtime victory in as many days. However, it wasn't meant to be. Colorado College's Steph Kelly took advantage of a Viking turnover deep in their own territory to score the game-winner with just five seconds left in overtime and give the Tigers a 12-11 win. Augustana fell to 2-1 on the year, suffering its first regular season loss since March 16, 2013. Colorado College evened its 2015 record at 2-2.
Kelly's free position goal with 24:27 left in regulation put the hosts up 7-3, their biggest lead of the day. Coach
Meredith Newman's Vikings came roaring back though. Sophomore
Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) started an Augustana spree of four goals in less than four minutes to tie the game. Senior
Kelly Stelzer's
(Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) free position goal with 18:28 left in regulation was the equalizer.
Kelly scored with the Tigers a player up at 15:10 and Dylan Voneiff added a goal at 10:32 to give her team a 9-7 lead. Viking junior
Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Voneiff traded goals at 3:24 and 1:24, respectively, and Augustana still trailed by two as the clock ticked under a minute.
With 50 seconds left in regulation, Nolan scored off a feed from junior
Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) to pull the Vikings within one. Sophomore
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) controlled the ensuing draw and after a Colorado College foul with 21 seconds left and an Augustana timeout, junior
Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) found Hopkins, who beat Tiger keeper Martha Smith high to tie the game at 10-all with 10 seconds left.
With the Vikings on a player advantage, Nolan gave Augustana its first lead with her fifth goal of the game at the 4:12 mark in overtime. Hopkins assisted on the play. Colorado College's Sadie Cole tied it at 11-all a minute later with a free position goal, setting the stage for Kelly's game-winner.
Kelly scored the game's first goal less than a minute in and the hosts jumped out in front 3-1. They maintained the lead until Stelzer's tying goal at 18:28 of the second half.
In addition to Nolan's five tallies, Hopkins and senior
Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) found the net twice each. Handrahan dished out four of the Vikings' six assists. Nolan controlled six draws and Mayer and junior goalie
Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) had a team-high four ground balls each. Hofmann also led Augustana with two caused turnovers and went all 66 minutes in goal, recording eight saves.
