03/05/15 – AUGUSTANA 6, ST. MARY'S (Minnesota) 5

Augustana had to battle from behind to pick up the victory after falling behind 4-1 through two innings. Two runs in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth allowed the Vikings to come out on top 6-5 in a game where St. Mary's was charged with seven errors.

St. Mary's picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first to go in front 1-0 but Augustana answered in the top of the second with two runs. Senior catcher Christina Pagan (Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.) singled home freshman Lauren Severson (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) with the first run and she scored the second on an error on a ball hit by senior Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.).

The lead didn't last long, however, as St. Mary's scored four runs in the bottom of the second on three hits and one Viking error. Augustana starter Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) was knocked from the game and was replaced in the circle by freshman Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.).

Grandt would work the final 5 2/3 innings and scatter four hits without allowing a run and pick up the victory, her third of the year without a defeat. She struck out six and walked just two.

The score stayed 5-2 heading into the top of the fifth when the Vikings struck for a pair of runs. Senior Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) led off with a single to center field and junior Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) reached on an error and moved Teson to second. Junior Kassandra Anderson (Geneseo HS, Silvis, Ill.) also reached on an error and Teson scampered home to make it 5-3 with Ashley Anderson taking third. A fly ball off the bat of junior Emily Rasche (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) plated Ashley Anderson to make it 5-4.

Grandt had a one-two-three inning in the fifth and Augustana went back to work in the sixth. Pagan led off with a walk and junior Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) reached on an error during a sacrifice bunt attempt with Pagan moving to second. Behnke advanced both runners one bas with a sacrifice bunt and Ashley Anderson ripped a single to center to score Pagan and Gray with what proved to be the difference-making runs in the game.
