Men’s lacrosse falls 6-2 at Centre

Junior Scott Davis accounted for both Augustana goals in Tuesday's 6-2 loss at Centre.

DANVILLE, Ky. – Augustana ran into some stout defense and a hot goalie Tuesday, dropping a 6-2 decision at Centre. The Vikings fall to 2-2 on the year, while the Colonels improved to 2-1. Junior Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) accounted for both Augustana goals.
 
Matt Hughes got Centre on the board with an unassisted goal halfway through the first period and Bryant Portwood made it 2-0 with a goal at 1:57 of the first. After nearly 14 minutes of scoreless play, Hughes found the net for the second time with just 2:56 to play before halftime. Davis scored for the Vikings less than a minute later and Coach Kyle Hart's squad trailed 3-1 going to the break.
 
Davis drew the visitors within one, scoring his second goal of the game and fourth of the season with 12:18 left in the third quarter. The rest of the period was scoreless and the teams went to the fourth with the Colonels leading 3-2.
 
Joe Lencewicz scored with 13:35 left to give the hosts some breathing room and he and Conor Bennett scored late in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Dustin Cowell assisted on Lencewicz's second goal at the 2:43 mark and Seth Gray provided a helper on Bennett's goal with 1:15 left.
 
Senior Cody Burgdorff (Peak to Peak Academy, Lafayette, Colo.) split time in goal for Augustana with junior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.). Burgdorff recorded seven saves in the first half and Peters stopped four Centre shots after halftime. Their counterpart for the Colonels, Bryce McCoy stopped 14 of 16 shots in 60 minutes in goal.
 
Senior Taylor McGinnis (New Trier HS, Kenilworth, Ill.) led the Vikings with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
 
Centre ended up with a 37-28 advantage in shots, and a 17-16 edge in shots on goal. The Colonels collected 35 ground balls to 20 for the Vikings. Augustana turned it over 31 times and Centre 28.
 
On Thursday, March 5, the Vikings will take on Berry in Mt. Berry, Georgia. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff.
