Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) started a Viking rally with a pair of goals less than a minute apart. The first, at 23:06, was unassisted and the second came on a free position attempt. Sophomore
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) scored off an assist from Kargl at 21:19 to cut the Denison advantage to 9-8.
After nearly 15 scoreless minutes, senior
Gina Filippo (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) scored her first goal of the season to tie the game with 6:47 to play.
Kargl scored a minute and a half later to complete a string of five straight Viking goals and give the visitors their first lead of the night at 10-9. Claire Ludlow's free position goal at the 3:52 mark tied things one more time prior to Kargl's game-winner.
Ludlow and Keller scored the game's first two goals to put Augustana in a hole. Sophomore
Anne Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) got the Vikings on the board with a free position goal at the 23:26 mark of the first half. However, Ludlow scored again and Kelsey Wright found the net with the Big Red on a player advantage to give Denison a 4-1 lead 10 minutes in. Junior
Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) took advantage of a Kargl assist to score, but the Big Red answered with three straight goals to take a 7-2 lead with 9:46 to play before halftime.
Augustana drew within 7-5 at the break, getting a free position goal from Kargl, a Handrahan free position tally with the Vikings a player down and a Kargl goal off a Hopkins assist in the final nine minutes of the period.
Kargl finished the night with four goals and two assists. Handrahan and Nolan each found the net twice. In addition, Nolan led Augustana with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Mayer controlled a team-high three draws. Junior
Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) made 13 saves in goal to help the Vikings overcome a 35-23 deficit in shot attempts.
The rest of the team statistics were remarkably close, with turnovers (23-23) and draw controls (11-11) even. Denison had a 19-18 edge in ground balls, while Augustana had a slight advantage in clears, succeeding on 12 of 18, to 11 of 19 for the Big Red.
The Vikings take on Kenyon in Gambier, Ohio on Saturday, March 28 at noon. Newman served as the Ladies offensive coordinator in 2010 and 2011.
