DAVENPORT, Iowa – It was not a day for pitching on Thursday, March 26 when Augustana traveled to Davenport, Iowa to face Quad City neighbor St. Ambrose. The double header featured a total of 47 hits and 37 runs as the Vikings lost 13-10 in the first game and tied the second game 7-7 when darkness ended the contest.

GAME 1: St. Ambrose 13, Augustana 10

Augustana fell behind by margins of 5-0, 7-2 and 10-2 before battling back to tie the game at 10-10 in the top of the fourth inning. That would not hold up, however, as St. Ambrose scored three runs in the top of the fifth and eventually held on for a 13-10 non-conference victory in the first game of a double header on a brisk afternoon.

The Queen Bees pounced on Viking starter Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Down 5-0, sophomore Brittany Kellett (The Woodlands HS, The Woodlands, Tex.) led off second inning with a home run to left center. Anderson then singled and eventually scored on an infield single by senior Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) to make it 5-2.

St. Ambrose scored two runs in the second and added three to the total in the third to go up 10-2.

Trailing by eight runs, the Vikings' bats came alive in the top of the fourth inning and exploded for seven runs on five hits and one St. Ambrose error. Ashley Anderson had a two run double and junior Kassandra Anderson (Geneseo HS, Silvis, Ill.) clobbered a three run home run to help lead the offensive surge.

Ashley Anderson's double in the fifth scored senior Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) with the game's tying run. However, Behnke was cut down at home attempting to score the lead run for the second out and Anderson was out at second for an inning-ending double play.

St. Ambrose used that momentum and tallied three in the bottom of the fifth and eventually went on to a 13-10 victory.

Augustana had 11 hits in the game with Ashley Anderson collecting three while Kassandra Anderson and Kellett each had two.

GAME 2 – Augustana 7, St. Ambrose 7 (tie)

St. Ambrose scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to forge a 7-7 tie and the game ended that way due to darkness.

The Vikings scored two runs in each of the first three innings and led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. St. Ambrose picked up two in the third and one in the fourth to make the score 6-3.

Augustana scored a single run in the top of the seventh inning and appeared to be in control to grab a split of the double header. However, the Queen Bees scored four runs on two hits and two costly Viking errors to secure the tie at 7-7.

In the first inning Behnke singled to lead off the game and went to second on a single by senior Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.). Behnke was out at third on a ball hit by Ashley Anderson. With one out, Teson scored when a ball hit by Kellett was misplayed with Anderson moving to third. She scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) to make it 2-0.

Two unearned runs in the second made it 4-0 in favor of Augustana. In the third Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) and Behnke added two more runs to run the lead to 6-0.

A one-out home run in the top of the seventh off the bat of Lavin made it 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Gray had three hits in the game and Lavin added two.
