ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Six different players scored goals as Augustana rolled to an easy 18-3 victory over Alma on a windy Thorson-Lucken Field on Sunday, March 22. The Vikings scored the game's first 10 goals and were never threatened as they moved their record to 4-1 on the season.

The game was not yet three minutes old when Augustana took the lead as junior Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) scored off an assist from senior Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.). That set the tone for an early explosion by first year head coach Meredith Newman's team.

After Cosman scored, sophomore Anne Hopkins (Mother Mcauley HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored off a free position shot and Kargl tallied on a goal with an assist going to senior Gina Filippo (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.). That made the score 3-0 with the game just over five minutes old.

It took the Vikings five minutes to score again but when junior Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) scored off a Hopkins assist, it opened the floodgates. Handrahan's goal came to 19:18 to make it 4-0. Kargl (17:29), Hopkins (16:25), Cosman (16:15), Kargl again (13:37), junior Kendal Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) (13:33) and Kargl (11:21) once again bombarded the Alma goal to make it 10-0.

Alma finally got on the board when Tracy Gallihugh scored unassisted at 9:23 to take off the running clock. It went right back on when Handrahan scored unassisted at 8:41. Alma's Ashton Street's goal at 4:46 once again took off the running clock as the margin was nine (11-2).

Goals by Hopkins and Kargl before halftime made it 13-2 at intermission and the running clock was in place the rest of the game.

There was no score for the first 17 minutes of the second half until Handrahan scored at 13:20 unassisted to make it 14-2. Hopkins would add two more and Handrahan would hit the nets once more. Junior Quinn Foley (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) tallied the final goal for the Vikings with 1:53 left to play.

Alma's last score came with just six seconds left to play from Street.

Hopkins led the team in scoring with five goals and three assists for eight points while Kargl had five goals and two assists for seven points. Handrahan had four goals and one assist for five points.

Junior Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) played the first 30 minutes in goal and picked up the victory, her fourth of the year. Junior Kaylee Nolan (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) won a team high five draw controls and Hopkins and senior Anna Kyllo (St. Croix Lutheran HS, Bloomington, Minn.) each had three ground balls.

Augustana will travel to Ohio this week and play Denison on March 26 in Granville and Kenyon on March 28 in Gambier. The Denison game will start at 7:00 p.m. and the first draw control for the Kenyon game will be at 1:00 p.m.
