ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.) came off the bench to score four goals Wednesday night as Augustana defeated Benedictine 13-8 at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Kyle Hart's squad improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 2-2.

After Benedictine's Jay Orndorf scored a minute and a half in, the Vikings responded with five straight goals in a span of less than five and a half minutes. Sophomore Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around one by junior Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Augustana led 3-1. Senior Taylor McGinnis (New Trier HS, Kenilworth, Ill.) scored his first career goal off an assist from freshman Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) and freshman John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) completed the spree with an unassisted goal and the lead was 5-1 with seven minutes left in the opening period.

Benedictine answered with three of the game's next four goals, however, to get back in it. Andrew Zmijewski scored to cut the Eagle deficit to 5-2. David Blanco picked up his second assist of the night on the play. Tony DePinto scored for Benedictine before Danko closed out the first quarter with an unassisted goal that put the hosts up 6-3.

Blanco scored the only goal of the second period and the teams went to halftime with Augustana leading 6-4.

The second half unfolded much like the first. Orndorf again scored first, with the Vikings answering with five straight goals. After Orndorf got the visitors to within 6-5, Davis scored off a Hawkins assist and Zielinski off a helper from senior Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.). Hawkins scored an unassisted goal to give Augustana a 9-5 lead after three periods.

Davis opened the fourth with an unassisted goal and added another off a Haley feed to put the Vikings up 11-5 with 8:54 remaining. Benedictine goals by Dominic DePinto and Tyler Buschow stopped the bleeding temporarily, but Haley scored on an assist from senior Vincent Giglierano (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) and Davis added Augustana's final goal with 2:18 to play. Orndorf scored with just over a minute left to complete the scoring.

In addition to Davis' four goals, Hawkins scored three and added an assist. Danko scored twice and Haley had a goal and two assists. Junior Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) played the final three periods in goal for Augustana and recorded 10 saves. Senior Ty Benson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and freshman McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) each collected five ground balls and Potter won 11 of 21 faceoffs.

The Vikings outshot Benedictine by a 36-28 margin and had a 37-30 advantage in ground balls. Turnovers were even at 13.

Augustana is back in action on Saturday, March 14, hosting Olivet in a noon contest.
