Things couldn't have gone too much smother for her as the Vikings scored with the game just 26 seconds old and never looked back. They were ahead 13-4 at halftime and dominated every statistical category.
Junior
Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored the first goal of the 2015 season on an assist by senior
Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) That came at the 29:34 mark and senior
Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) added an unassisted goal at 28:05 and the onslaught never slowed.
Augustana led 3-0 before Augsburg's Natalie Shaw scored an unassisted goal at 21:26 to make it 3-1. The Vikings then ran off three more goals to make it a 6-1 contest. Kargl, the leading returning career goal scorer in NCAA Division III, found the back of the net for the first time at the 18:40 mark when she scored off a Stelzer assist to make it 4-1. Kargl assisted on the next goal, which was scored by sophomore
Anne Hopkins (Mother Mcauley HS, Chicago, Ill.) and scored the game's seventh goal unassisted, which made the score 6-1.
At halftime Augustana was in control with a 13-4 lead and Hopkins' goal less than three minutes into the second half (27:07) started the running clock. Junior
Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) assisted on Hopkins goal.
Kargl finished the night with four goals and three assists and led the team in ground balls with four. Hopkins also scored four goals and she had one assist and a pair of ground balls. Stelzer tallied three goals and an assist. Maduro, Cosman and junior
Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) each had a pair of goals and an assist. Cosman had one ground ball while Handrahan added three. Maduro had two ground balls, one draw control and one caused turnover.
Seniors
Emily Pavlik (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) and
Alex Palmisano (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and juniors
Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.) and
Kaylee Nolan (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) all added one goal each. Nolan led the team in draw controls with six while Pavlik chipped in with five. Palmisano had three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
The Augustana defense allowed just 11 shots for the entire game, including only four in the second half and senior
Gina Filippo (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) had four caused turnovers while senior
Bridget Conniff (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) had three.
Junior
Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) picked up the victory in goal and allowed four goals with two saves in just over 52 minutes worth of work. Freshman
Analia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) came in and saw action for the final 7:48 and gave up one goal and had one assist.
The Vikings held a 48-11 advantage in shots over the host team and won the ground ball battle 29-21. Augustana completely dominated the draw controls, winning 22 of the 28. Newman's team was successful on 20 of 22 clear attempts while Augsburg was good on just 12 of 23.
Augustana will be idle until March 4 when the Vikings travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to face Susquehanna.
