Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) went the distance, fanning 15 Sunday, as Coach
Greg Wallace's Augustana baseball team opened the 2015 season with a 9-0 win over Brandeis. The Vikings (1-0) were scheduled to take on Hanover later in the day, but that game has been moved to Tuesday, February 24.
Davis and Judges' starter Kyle Brenner matched goose eggs through four innings before Augustana put three on the board in the top of the fifth. Freshman first baseman
Tommy Kiriakopoulos (Huntley HS, Lake in the Hills, Ill.) started the frame with a single through the left side. Junior Alex Flueher
(Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) beat out a bunt, moving Kiriakopoulos to second and senior
Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) advanced them to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Junior
Nathan Gray (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) followed with a two-run double to right, giving Davis all the runs he would need. Gray came around to score one out later on a double to left by junior catcher
John Swiderski (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.).
It looked as though the Vikings would add to the lead in the sixth, loading the bases on singles by senior
Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Kiriakopoulos and a Brandeis error. However, Brenner got the final two outs to get out of the jam.
It was still 3-0 Augustana before the flood gates opened in the top of the ninth. Jasper led off with a double down the left field line and after a Gray sacrifice, came around to score on
Danny Fifer's
(Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) single to right. Swiderski's single to center finally knocked out Brenner in favor of Ryan Pocock, but he couldn't put the fire out. By the time the inning was over, the Vikings had plated six. Senior
Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) and Camalick added RBI singles and Fluehr a two-run single.
Davis (1-0) stranded a pair of Judges in the bottom of the frame to finish off the complete-game shutout. He allowed just three singles and a pair of walks, while setting down 15 Brandeis batters on strikes.
All nine men in Wallace's starting lineup scored a run and eight delivered at least one hit, with seven having multi-hit games. Jasper, who stepped into the leadoff spot, led the way with four hits. Swiderski, batting cleanup, added three knocks, as did Camalick and Kiriakopoulos. Fifer, Lenihan and Fluehr each had a pair of safeties. Gray and Fluehr had two RBI apiece.
The Vikings take on Capital at Chain of Lakes at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23.
