Ben Ryan (Washington HS, Washington, Ill.),
Hunter Hill (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and
Tayvian Johnson (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) combined for 40 of their 46 points before halftime. Those three accounted for all of Augustana's points as the Vikings jumped in front 12-4 four minutes in.
An 8-0 Griffins run tied it, but the visitors answered with a 9-0 spurt, capped by a Hill three-pointer. The lead reached double digits (25-15) on the second of consecutive
Jacob Johnston (Erie HS, Cordova, Ill.) baskets just before the midway point of the first half. Johnston's free throw at the 8:53 push the lead back to double figures for good as Augustana outscored Fontbonne 24-6 over the last nine minutes of the period.
Ryan finished the half with 16 points and four rebounds while Johnson had 13 and four, respectively. Hill added 11 points.
The Vikings extended the lead to 31, at 58-27, on two Hill free throws with 15:14 to play. A Johnston bucket at the 9:39 mark equaled that biggest margin of the night at 64-33, before the Griffins closed the contest on a 24-16 run.
Ryan finished with a game-high 16 points. Johnson and Hill each added 15 and Johnston 11—his second straight double-digit effort off the bench. Senior
Brandon Motzel (Carmel HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and freshman
Pierson Wofford (Lutheran HS, Springfield, Ill.) each grabbed a game-high five rebounds. Senior
Griffin Pils (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) dished out four assists. Johnson blocked three shots and three Vikings came away with two steals each.
Fontbonne outshot Augustana .490 (24-49) to .424 (25-59) from the field, but the Vikings dominated the boards (40-25), committed half as many turnovers (nine, to 18 for the Griffins) and went to the free throw line 35 times, converting 26 (.743). Jeff Smith came off the bench to lead Fontbonne with nine points and five rebounds.
Giovanine's club will face a stiff challenge its next time out. Augustana travels to Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday, December 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
