Freshman Matt Hesch made several outstanding saves Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to keep
Augustana from falling 2-0 to Simpson at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Simpson scored once in each half Wednesday, handing Augustana a 2-0 defeat at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 3-9-1 on the year, while the Storm improved to 5-6-1.

Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. An Augustana misplay near midfield led to a breakaway for Cody Jacobson. Viking keeper Matt Hesch (St. Edward HS, Elgin, Ill.) came out of the goal aggressively, but couldn't stop Jacobson's shot. Collin Hemann was credited with the assist.

The first period ended with the Storm holding that 1-0 lead.

Midway through the second half, Hesch kept the deficit at one with a pair of outstanding saves on back-to-back shots by Jacobson and Garrett Pochop. After making a diving stop on Jacobson, he recovered and did the same on Pohop's point-blank follow-up.

Hesch made another diving save on Jacobson in the 82nd minute, but in the 85th, Simpson used a great build up to score an insurance goal. From the right side, Pochop centered to Colin Robinson, who passed up a shot to feed a wide open Jacobson. The Storm senior finished off the play with his second goal of the night and third on the season. Both Robinson and Pochop earned assists.

Augustana outshot the visitors from Indianola, Iowa by a 15-11 margin, but Simpson had a 5-3 advantage in corners. Hesch was credited with five saves, while Zach McEntee of the Storm recorded four.

The Vikings are back at Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, October 10, hosting Elmhurst at 3:30 p.m.
