Senior Kelly Farell (20) is mobbed by teammates after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime
Wednesday. The Vikings defeated 22nd-ranked Wheaton 2-1 at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) scored in the fifth minute of overtime Wednesday to lift Augustana to a 2-1 win over 22nd-ranked Wheaton at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Scott Mejia's Vikings improved to 14-3-1 on the year and 4-1-1 in the CCIW, while the Thunder dropped to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the league.

It looked like the hosts had taken a 1-0 in the 18th minute. Wheaton keeper Abbey Fuster couldn't cleanly field a loose ball in front of the Thunder goal and Augustana senior Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) collected it and found the back of the net. However, Kras was ruled offside and the match remained scoreless.

In the 27th minute, Wheaton's Hannah Hodge served a long cross in from the right side and Kristin Rauh headed it into the back of the net for her 11th goal of the season and a 1-0 Thunder lead. That's the way the half would end, as the visitors got off the only two shots of the period. Rauh's goal was the only shot put on frame in the first 45 minutes.

The Vikings picked up the pace offensively after halftime. Farell got off a pair of shots in the first six minutes and senior Stef Hamaker (Boylan Catholic HS, Caledonia, Ill.) had another off a Brianne Frys (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) corner in the 59th minute.

In the 63rd minute, it looked like Kras had the equalizer when she scored off a scramble in front of the Wheaton goal, but she was ruled offside again and the Thunder maintained its 1-0 advantage.

Finally, in the 71st minute, Hannah Lohmeier's (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) header off a Frys assist leveled the score. The goal was Lohmeier's third of the season and Frys recorded ninth helper, fourth-most in a single season at Augustana.

Each team got off two shots over the final 19 minutes, but the score remained 1-1 and the teams headed for overtime.

Just over four minutes into the extra session, Farell collected a high ball served in by Lohmeier and beat a pair of Wheaton defenders, as well as Fuster, with the game-winner. The goal was Farell's team-leading 14th of the season, which is tied for seventh all-time in a single season at Augustana.

The Vikings finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots, with all nine coming after halftime. Augustana also took the only two corners in the match.

Mejia's club wraps up regular season play this Saturday, hosting Millikin at Thorson-Lucken Field at 3:30 p.m.
