ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The nation's 25th-ranked squad, Wheaton, proved to be too much for Augustana Wednesday night, defeating the Vikings 3-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Thunder improved to 11-3-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCIW, while the Vikings dropped to 4-13-1 on the year and 1-5 in the conference.

Tyler Robbins gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, scoring his fourth goal of the season with an assist from Stephen Golz. That would be the score as the teams went to intermission.

The Thunder outshot Augustana 6-2 in the opening half. Wheaton also had a 3-2 advantage in corners.

Early in the second period, the Vikings had a pair of great opportunities to level the score, but came away empty. On the second of consecutive Samuel Kratzer (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) corners from the right side, senior Gabriel Brouillette (Carmel HS, Mundelein, Ill.) had his point blank shot blocked over the cross bar. That resulted in another Kratzer corner from the left side. Senior Jonathan Colucci (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) got a head on it, but a Thunder defender blocked the attempt.

Wheaton took advantage less than two minutes later. Marshall Hollingsworth's penalty kick in the 58th minute put his side up 2-0. The goal was number 16 on the season for Hollingsworth. Golz tallied his fourth of the year a minute later off assists from Robbins and Max Carey to make it 3-0.

Freshman Matt Hesch (St. Edward HS, Elgin, Ill.) started and went the first 67 minutes in goal for Augustana. Classmate Jeff Bell (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) relieved him and made three saves in 23 scoreless minutes. Thunder keeper Matt Paprocki went the distance, recording three saves.

Wheaton finished with a 15-7 edge in shots, putting seven on frame to three for the Vikings. Augustana had a 5-3 advantage in corners. There were 27 fouls called in the match—16 on the Vikings and 11 on the Thunder.

Coach Mick Regan's Vikings will close out the 2015 season on Saturday, October 31, hosting Millikin in a 1:00 p.m. match at Thorson-Lucken Field.
