Football Preview: Augustana vs. Elmhurst

Senior quarterback Sam Frasco heads into Saturday's
CCIW opener versus Elmhurst leading the nation in
five statistical categories, including total offense and
scoring.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – For the second time in the season's first three weeks, Augustana's Sam Frasco (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) has earned the CCIW's Offensive Player of the Week award. The senior quarterback earned the honor for the second time following a record-setting 585-total yard performance at Loras on September 19. He and his Vikings teammates open CCIW play on Saturday, October 3, hosting Elmhurst at Lindberg Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. Coach Steve Bell's squad comes into the contest sporting a 1-2 record, while the Bluejays, led by Coach Ron Planz, are 3-0.

Frasco is off to a remarkable start this year. He leads the nation in five statistical categories: total offense (465.7 yards per game), scoring (20.0 points per game), points per game responsible for (36.0), rushing touchdowns (10) and yards per rushing attempt (11.8). In addition, he's second in the nation with an average of 212.0 rushing yards per game. Amazingly, he's also seventh in the nation in all-purpose yardage (a combination of rushing, receiving, kickoff return and punt return yards) despite not having caught a pass or returned a kick all season.

With Frasco leading the way, the Viking offense ranks seventh nationally in total offense at 583.3 yards per game, ninth in rushing offense at 329.7 yards per game and 18th in scoring offense at 47.7 points per game. Augustana is tied for the national lead in red zone efficiency with 11 touchdowns and a field goal in 12 trips inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

Elmhurst is coming in off a 31-12 win at Simpson last Saturday. The Bluejay defense has allowed an average of just 12.0 points per game through three contests. Junior linebacker Andy Warsen and junior safety Sean Wetherall are the team's leading tacklers, with 27 and 26, respectively. Wetherall, who prepped locally at Alleman High School and played his home games at Ericson Field, also has one of the Bluejays two interceptions this year. He is the reigning CCIW Defensive Player of the Week. Elmhurst has forced a total of seven turnovers already. Rover Valdez Honorable (nine tackles, one interception) was a second team All-CCIW pick in 2014.

Offensively, Planz relies heavily on running back Josh Williams. The senior, who was a first team All-CCIW selection a year ago, has rushed for 549 yards and six touchdowns on 83 carries (6.6 yrads per attempt) this year. Like Frasco, he has won CCIW Offensive Player of the Week honors twice this year.

Junior Drew Domino has taken over the starting quarterback duties. He's completed 21 of 38 (55.3%) pass attempts for 200 yards. He's been intercepted once and has yet to throw a touchdown pass. Senior tight end Garrett Claxon, another first team All-CCIW returnee, leads the Bluejays with 16 pass receptions for 125 yards.

Senior Brett Bayer is perfect on nine point after attempts and four field goal tries. He also averages 35.3 yards per punt.
