Vikings rally, but fall at Carthage

Senior Anthony D'Angelo had a goal and an assist in Augustana's 5-3 loss at Carthage Saturday.

KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie Saturday's match with Carthage, but the Red Men scored twice in the last six minutes to salt away a win at Art Keller Field. Coach Mick Regan's Vikings fell to 4-10-1 on the season and 1-2 in the CCIW. Carthage improved to 9-5-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.
 
Red Men Giles Phillips and Austin Bitta each scored in the game's first four minutes. Giles' second goal of the season, just 1:03 in, was assisted by Jake Bukiri and Sahr Mahoney. Bitta's fourth of the year, in the fourth minute, came on a free kick.
 
Carthage extended its lead to 3-0 in the 34th minute on Nick Vogel's second goal of the season. Bitta and Ivan Chavez were credited with assists.
 
Freshman Sam Kratzer's (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) first career goal got Regan's bunch on the board in the 39th minute. Senior Anthony D'Angelo's (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) assist was his third of the year, tying him for the team lead. The first half ended with the Viking trailing 3-1.
 
Junior Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) scored on a penalty kick to narrow the deficit to 3-2 in the 57th minute. His fourth goal tied him for the team lead this year.
 
D'Angelo got the Vikings level at 3-3 in the 70th minute, scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from senior Jonathan Colucci (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.).
 
The Red Men iced the contest with a pair of goals in the waning minutes. A penalty kick by Bukiri in the 85th resulted in his second goal of the season and a 4-3 Carthage lead. Just before the final buzzer, Shane O'Reilly scored his fourth goal of the year with assists from Phillips and Michael Modesti to make the final 5-3.
 
The Red Men held a 17-14 edge in shots. Each team put 10 attempts on frame. Carthage had a 6-4 advantage in corners. Viking freshman Matt Hesch (St. Edward HS, Elgin, Ill.) went the distance in goal, making five saves. His counterpart for the Red Men, Evan Bott, recorded seven saves.
 
Augustana will be back on the road for another league contest on Wednesday, October 21, traveling to Naperville, Illinois to face North Central in an 8:00 p.m. match.
