Sophomore Brianne Frys and the Augustana defense limited UW-Whitewater to just four shots
Wednesday, but the Vikings fell 1-0 to the Warhawks at Thorson-Lucken Field.ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Nicole Lorenz's header off a Carina Krausert corner in the 65th minute Wednesday gave Wisconsin-Whitewater a 1-0 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Scott Mejia's Vikings fall to 5-2 on the year, while the Warhawks improve to 7-2.
The match was a defensive struggle throughout. Augustana took the only two shots of the opening half. Junior
Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) had the Vikings' best opportunity in the eighth minute from about 10 yards straight on, but UW-Whitewater keeper Jordan Myers punched it over the crossbar. The only other shot came from freshman
Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.) about thirty seconds later, but it was blocked.
The deciding sequence occurred midway through the second half, when Whitewater was awarded back-to-back corners. The first, by Sierra High from the left side, couldn't be effectively cleared by Augustana, resulting in another by Krausert from the right side. She put her kick right in front of the Viking goal and Lorenz got a head on it and put it in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Augustana got off six shots in the final 25 minutes, but only two were put on goal and Myers, who was credited with three saves on the night, was up to the challenge. Viking junior keeper
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded a pair of saves.
Although Augustana outshot the visitors by a 9-4 margin, UW-Whitewater held a huge 9-1 edge in corners.
The Vikings will try and rebound on Saturday, September 27, when they host Webster in a 1:00 p.m. match at Thorson-Lucken Field.
