Junior Gabriel Brouillette scored the game-winner in the 76th
minute Saturday as Augustana defeated Benedictine 2-1 in
Lisle, Illinois.

LISLE, Ill. – Gabriel Brouillette (Carmel HS, Mundelein, Ill.) parlayed an assist from Patrick Nelson (Jacksonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) into a go-ahead goal in the 76th minute Saturday and Augustana made that lead hold up, defeating Benedictine 2-1 at the University Sports Complex. Coach Brenton Joseph's Vikings, playing their sixth consecutive road match, improved to 4-2 on the season. The host Eagles fell to 1-4-1.

Sophomore Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) gave Augustana the lead in the 17th minute with an unassisted goal, his first of the year. The Vikings maintained that 1-0 lead until the 38th minute, when Benedictine's Ante Markotic leveled the score with an assist from Nick Kapetanos. The goal was Markotic's second of the season, while Kaspetanos recorded his first helper.

The teams went to the halftime break tied at 1-1. The Eagles outshot Augustana 7-4 and took the only corner of the match in the opening 45 minutes. The visitors were whistled for seven first-half fouls to just two for the hosts.

Early in the second period, the Vikings dodged a bullet when a shot by Benedictine's Edgar Reyes hit the post. The Eagles got off three more shots and Augustana two before Nelson and Brouillette teamed up for the go-ahead goal at 75:45. The goal was Brouillette's first of the season and Nelson, the Vikings' leading goal-scorer this year, was credited with his first assist.

Joseph's defense limited Benedictine to just one shot the rest of the way. It came from Kapetanos in the 85th minute and senior goalkeeper Brett Johnson (Zion-Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) stopped it for his fifth and final save of the match.

The Eagles outshot Augustana 12-7, with half of Benedictine's attempts being put on goal. The Vikings put just three attempts on goal, but got two of them past Eagle keeper Steve Mack. Augustana was called for 10 fouls, to six for the Eagles, and were issued two yellow and one red card. Benedictine received one caution as well.

The Vikings will finally play their 2014 home opener on Sunday, September 21, when they host Westminster in a 1:00 p.m. match at Thorson-Lucken Field.
