Vikings pick up first win of the season at Adrian

Junior Jonathan Colucci had a pair of assists in Augustana's 3-0 win at Adrian Sunday.

ADRIAN, Mich.Danilo Panici (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) had a goal and an assist Sunday and junior Jonathan Colucci (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) dished out a pair of assists as Augustana evened its 2014 record at 1-1 with a 3-0 whitewash of Adrian. The Viking defense was stellar, holding the host Bulldogs to just three shot attempts, none of which were on goal.
 
Panici gave Augustana the lead in the fifth minute, scoring off a Colucci assist to make it 1-0. It was the senior's first career goal. In the 18th minute, Panici delivered his first career assist, getting the helper on a goal by junior Anthony D'Angelo (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.). Augustana would take its 2-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
 
Junior Patrick Nelson's (Jacksonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) goal in the 71st minute accounted for the final. Colucci, who tied for the team lead in assists a year ago, was credited with his second of the day on the play.
 
The Vikings dominated statistically, outshooting Adrian 15-3 and piling up an 8-3 advantage in corners. Augustana's defense, led by 2013 team MVP Erik Gustafson (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.), held the Bulldogs without a shot on goal the entire match. Senior keeper Brett Johnson (Zion-Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) went 87 minutes to pick up the win. Freshman Kyle Oehler (Plainfield Central HS, Crest Hill, Ill.) finished up in goal.
 
The Vikings' road show will continue on Friday, September 5, when Coach Brenton Joseph's side will play its third of six straight road matches to open the season. Augustana will face Northwestern in St. Paul, Minnesota.
