Augustana drops season opener at Albion

Senior Adam Bengfort tallied Augustana's only goal in a season-opening loss at Albion Saturday.

ALBION, Mich. – Kyle Alsheskie scored twice Saturday to lead Albion to a 3-1 win over Augustana at Alumni Field in the Vikings' 2014 season opener. The host Britons improved to 1-1 on the year. Senior Adam Bengfort (Assumption HS, Davenport, Ill.) scored Augustana's lone goal.
 
Alsheskie gave Albion the lead with a goal off a Colin Howard assist in the 28th minute. That would be the only scoring in the first half, although the Vikings outshot the Britons by a 6-4 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
 
In the 58th minute, Steven Lockhart extended the Albion advantage to 2-0 with an unassisted goal. In the 66th minute, Alsheskie tallied his second goal, again assisted by Howard, to make it 3-0 Britons. Bengfort finally got Augustana on the board with an unassisted goal in the 84th minute.
 
Viking keeper Brett Johnson (Zion-Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) was credited with three saves, while his counterpart for Albion, Andrew Bobowski, had four. Augustana finished with an 11-10 edge in shots. The Britons took two corners to the Vikings' one.
 
There were 31 fouls called and six cautions issued in the match.
 
Augustana is back in action on Sunday, September 1, travelling to Adrian, Michigan to face the Adrian Bulldogs in a 2:00 p.m. match.
