BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan's Jenna Nolan limited Augustana to three hits Friday evening as the 12th-ranked Titans remained unbeaten in CCIW Tournament play with a 4-2 over the 19th-rated Vikings. Augustana, now 32-10 on the year, faces Carthage in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. Illinois Wesleyan, who improved to 36-5, awaits the winner at noon on Saturday.
Junior left fielder
Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead, pounding a Nolan offering over the fence in right for her fifth homer of the season to lead off the bottom of the first. The Titan starter settled in after that though, retiring 13 of the next 14 batters, with a walk to junior
Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) representing the only base runner during that time.
Meanwhile, after setting down IWU in order in the first two innings, Augustana starter
Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) gave up a home run to Chloe Montgomery to lead off the third. She allowed a single and a walk and another Titan reached on an error, but she escaped further damage by inducing an Allie Riordan groundout to end the inning. Hintz stranded two more runners in the fourth and had another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth as the teams went to the sixth tied 1-1.
Riordan led off the sixth with an infield hit and was sacrificed to second. Amanda Fazzarri doubled down the left field line to plate Riordan with the go-ahead run. Katie Caulfield followed with a single that scored Fazzari for a 3-1 IWU lead.
Junior second baseman
Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) got the Vikings to within a run, launching a one-out solo homer to right in the bottom of the sixth, but Riordan answered with one of her own in the top of the seventh and the Titans led 4-2.
Nolan finished with a flourish, striking out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for her 11th win of the season in 14 decisions. Hintz threw her second complete game of the day, but suffered her fourth loss against 16 wins.
In addition to the two home runs, Lavin had Augustana's only other hit, a one-out double to left in the fifth.
