Perfect season hits Salisbury roadblock

A 14-0 deficit proved to be too much for the Augustana women's lacrosse team to handle during the NCAA Division III round of 16 loss against the host Salisbury on Saturday, May 17th in Salisbury, Maryland with a final 16-3 tally. The Vikings' unbeaten streak ended at 19 as the blue and gold ended its extraordinary season at 19-1.
 
Salisbury struck early in the contest but the Augustana defense stood tall and kept the Sea Gull advantage to just three until the 16:34 mark. Goalkeeper Jenna Hofmann (Columbine H.S., Littleton, Colo.) anchored the unit and had six saves on the day.
 
The Sea Gulls held a 12-0 halftime advantage along with a 19-5 shot margin.  The hosts also committed 12 of the 19 first half fouls. Augustana held a 7-6 edge in first half draws.
 
After a pair of early second half Salisbury scores the Vikings final broke through the Sea Gulls' defense with an unassisted Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville H.S., Wheaton, Ill.) goal at the 23:15 mark of the second half.
 
Another Sea Gulls' goal made the tally 15-1 with 15:50 left in the contest. Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley H.S., Naperville, Ill.) found the back of the net with 8:44 remaining on an Annie Hopkins (Mother Mcauley H.S., Chicago, Ill.) to make the score 15-2.  Junior Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) recorded the final score for head coach Sara Tisdale's unit with 3:37 to go. The hosts capitalized on a free-position shot with 15 ticks left for the final 16-3 margin.
 
In the contest, Salisbury held a 25-12 shot advantage along with a 17-10 margin in ground balls. The hosts finished with an 11-10 edge in draw controls. Augustana went 10-14 in clear attempts while the Sea Gulls were 17-18. The Vikings did not capitalize on any of their three free-position tries while Salisbury went 2-3. Salisbury and Augustana finished even with six saves each.
 
Maduro and Nattali Shelton (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S., Wheaton, Ill.) tied for a team-high two ground balls. Olivia Mayer (Libertyville H.S., Greens Oaks, Ill.)  grabbed a game-high four draws while Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic H.S., St. John, Ind.) controlled three.
 
Six Vikings caused a turnover including: Stelzer, Hofmann, Barbara Vega (Marian Central Catholic H.S., Flossmoor, Ill.), Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg H.S., Orland Park, Ill.), Alex Palmisano (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S., Wheaton, Ill.), and Kaitlin Hightower (Providence H.S., Matthews, North Carolina).
 
Augustana finished the season with a 19-1 record and added Midwest Lacrosse Conference regular season and conference tournament trophies to its long list of accolades. The Vikings will bring an 18-game winning streak at Thorson-Lucken Field into the 2015 season. Augustana is 27-1 all-time at home. Over the last three seasons the program has combined for a 51-8 record.
