Meredith Goodale (New Trier HS, Glencoe, Ill.) found the back of the net with 2:36 remaining in the game to give the Augustana women's lacrosse team its 21
st goal of the afternoon at Thorson-Lucken Field on Sunday, April 6
th. The Vikings overpowered the undermanned visitors from Loras for a 21-3 final margin. Head coach Sara Tisdale's team climbed to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference play.
Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) broke her own assist record set just one day earlier in a seven assist, two goal effort to help lift the Vikings past the Duhawks.
Sophomore
Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.) and freshman
Madi Stoneman (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) led the Vikings' offense with three goals each. Pollard also tallied two assists on the afternoon. Six Vikings scored twice including: Kargl,
Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.),
Shelby Cosman (Marion Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.),
Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.),
Annie Hopkins (Mother Mcauley HS, Chicago, Ill.), and
Maggie DelVecchio (Barrington HS, Barrington, Ill.).
Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.),
Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), and Goodale each found the back of the net for a goal in the contest as well.
Handrahan accompanied her two goals with a trio of assists while Hopkins registered two assists.
Gina Filippo (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) also recorded one of the 15 blue and gold assists in the contest.
Augustana wasted no time and tallied its first goal just 36 seconds after the opening draw and took an early three goal lead before Kaitlyn Kutsch of Loras recorded her 55
th goal of the season to make the score 3-1. Tisdale's crew then scored 12 straight goals for a 15-1 halftime advantage. The running clock came into play following a DelVecchio goal with 20:12 left before intermission.
Loras scored the first and last goals of the second half with six Viking goals in between the Duhawk tallies.
In terms of statistics, the hosts outshot Loras by a 29-3 margin including a 20-1 halftime mark with no Viking attempting more than three shots. Kargl gathered four of the Vikings' 22 ground balls on the afternoon. Loras turned the ball over 17 times. The Vikings forced nine of the mishaps with nine different players tallying a caused turnover. Augustana turned the ball over 13 times in the contest. The blue and gold controlled 22 of the 27 draws in the match with Nolan registering six.
Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) got the win in goal for Tisdale's squad after playing 17:10 and allowing one Duhawk goal. The Vikings led 13-1 when
Sarah Osier (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) stepped into the net to play the remaining 42:50 of the contest. Osier allowed Kutsch's 56
th goal of the season and also allowed Loras's Anna Schwalbe to score. The blue and gold did not record a save on the afternoon whereas Loras denied four shots.
The Vikings hit the road for three conference contests in the next week and a half. On Tuesday, April 8
th Augustana visits Benedictine who currently sits at 1-7 overall and 0-2 in MWLC play. Tisdale's bunch defeated the Eagles 23-2 in 2013 in the only previous meeting between the programs. The blue and gold return to Thorson-Lucken Field on Tuesday, April 22
nd to face North Central.
