CHICAGO, Ill. – Sophomore
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) had another big day in the circle and at the plate Sunday, helping lead Augustana to a 5-3, 8-2 doubleheader sweep of North Park at the Holmgren Athletics Complex. Anderson went 3-for-4 with four RBI on the day and picked up a complete game victory in the night cap. Senior
Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and junior
Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) each had four hits, including Watson's third home run of the season. Coach
Kris Kistler's 19th-ranked club improved to 22-6 overall this year and 3-1 in CCIW play. North Park is now 8-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.
AUGUSTANA 5, NORTH PARK 3 Senior right-hander
Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) held the hosts without a hit through 3 2/3 innings, while her offense staked her to a 4-0 lead in the opener.
Teson pulled a one-out triple to right in the top of the first and scored the first run of the game when Anderson followed with a double to center. The Vikings continued to spray the ball around the entire field, as Watson and senior
Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) also doubled, to left and right respectively, to make it 3-0 Augustana after a half inning.
Junior
Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) started the fourth by being hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score an unearned run when Teson reached via an error.
After North Park touched Hintz for its first hit in the fourth, Watson made it 5-0 in the top of the fifth with a solo homer to left field.
The hosts finally got on the board with three runs off Wiersema in the bottom of the sixth. Kaity Olson had an RBI single and scored on Nicole Kruckman's two-run homer to center. That would be all that North Park would muster though, as Wiersema set down the final four batters of the game without incident.
Hintz went four scoreless innings to earn her 11th win of the season against just two losses. Watson paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in.
AUGUSTANA 8, NORTH PARK 2 Augustana, designated as the home team in game two, took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Anderson reached on an infield hit and came around to score on Watson's RBI double. Watson later came home on a wild pitch. The Vikings added two more in the second on sacrifice flies off the bats of junior
Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) and Anderson.
North Park got two runs back in the third. Paige Massa drove one in with a single then was part of a double steal, with Kristin Reichert scoring on the front end.
Kistler's club tallied three more in the fourth to make it 7-2. Behnke led off with a single to right and stole second. Teson drove her in with a double down the left field line and Anderson singled to center to score Teson. After a pair of North Park errors, Rehmert lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Anderson.
In the fifth, freshman
Amanda Ebert (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) led off with a single and eventually scored the game's final run on an Anderson sacrifice fly to right.
Anderson went the distance, shutting North Park out over the final four innings to earn her eighth win in 12 decisions. She gave up just three hits and two runs. She walked three and struck out five and added a 2-for-2, two-run, three-RBI performance at the plate.
Behnke finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Teson went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI and Watson was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and one driven in. Wiersema had two hits and scored a run as well.
