KENOSHA, Wis. – Senior
Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) capped a three-run seventh-inning with an RBI single Saturday as Augustana rallied to win the second game of a doubleheader 6-5 and earn a split at Carthage. The 19th-ranked Vikings dropped the opener 4-3 in eight innings. Coach
Kris Kistler's club is now 20-6 on the season and 1-1 in the CCIW. The Lady Reds are 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the league. Augustana travels to Chicago, Illinois on Sunday, April 6, to face North Park in a CCIW twin bill starting at noon.
CARTHAGE 4, AUGUSTANA 3 (8 Innings) Carthage's Katie Morman singled to left, scoring Bryanna Heckel with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as the hosts won the opener 4-3. The Lady Reds saddled Augustana senior
Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS. Le Roy, Ill.) with just her second loss in 12 decisions this year.
The Vikings took an early lead with a run each in the top of the first and second innings. Juniors
Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) and
Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) started the game with back-to-back doubles off Lady Red Mackenzie Walker to make it 1-0 and added an unearned run in the second when senior
Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored with the help of two Carthage errors.
They Lady Reds took the lead with three in the third. The big shot was Vicki Pyan's two-run homer to left.
Both Hintz and Walker settled in and held the score at 3-2 until the Vikings tied it in the seventh. Walker retired Behnke and Teson to start the frame, but sophomore
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) reached on an infield hit. Sophomore
Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) pinch ran for Anderson and after a
Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) single and a Carthage error, scored the equalizer on a wild pitch.
The Lady Reds went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and Augustana in the top of the eighth, with each leaving a runner stranded, but Morman came through with a one-out, bases loaded single to score Heckel with the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.
Hintz allowed just three hits in 7 1/3 innings, but issued an uncharacteristic five walks while fanning six.
AUGUSTANA 6, CARTHAGE 5 The Vikings, designated as the home team for the night cap, trailed 5-3 going to the bottom of the seventh. Freshman
Amanda Ebert (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) led off with a pinch hit single. One out later, Behnke legged out an infield hit and Teson followed with an RBI single to center. Carthage brought in game one winner Walker, who advanced the runners to second and third with a wild pitch. A walk to Anderson and a Watson pop out left the bases loaded with two outs. Another wild pitch allowed Behnke to score the tying run and Rehmert delivered a single to left, plating Teson with the game winner.
The Lady Reds touched Anderson for a run in the top of the first, snapping her string of 24 consecutive scoreless innings. Heckel led off with a single and scored an unearned run on an Augustana error. The Vikings answered with two in the bottom half. Behnke led off with a single, eventually scoring on a passed ball and Teson walked and came home on Watson's sacrifice fly to center.
Watson had a one-out double to center in the fourth and extended the Augustana lead to 3-1 when she scored on a single up the middle by junior
Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.).
Carthage tied it in the top of the fifth, scoring twice off Anderson to end her streak of 28 innings without allowing an earned run. Olivia Scott blasted a two-out, solo home run to center and Heckel delivered an RBI double to left center.
Junior
Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) came on to start the sixth in the circle and the Lady Reds scored twice more to take the lead. Morman and Alyse Mikolas each drove in a run with a single. Wiersema stranded Carthage runners at second and third in the top of the seventh to set up the Vikings' rally in the bottom of the frame.
Wiersema picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. Lady Red starter Darian Pelsor suffered the loss. Behnke, Rehmert and Lavin each had two of Augustana's nine hits. Behnke and Teson each scored twice.
