KENOSHA, Wis. – Coach Greg Wallace got great balance throughout his order and another solid performance from starting pitcher Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) Sunday as his Augustana baseball team defeated Carthage 12-1 at Augie Schmidt Field. With the win, the Vikings—23-10 overall and 10-6 in the CCIW—pull into a first-place tie with North Park in the conference standings. The Red Men drop to 16-18 on the year and 7-11 in the league.

All nine batters in Augustana's starting lineup recorded at least one hit and one RBI and eight scored at least one run. Seven Vikings had multiple hits, led by three off the bat of junior designated hitter Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.). White went the distance in the contest, shortened to seven innings by the 10-run rule, and got the win to improve to 5-0 on the year.

Things were decided, for all intents and purposes, in a seven-run Augustana second inning. Senior Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk from Carthage starter Marc Mantucca and moved to third on a Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) single and a Carthage error. Junior Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) then put the Vikings on top with an RBI single to center. Camalick had a bunt single to load the bases and sophomores Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) and Alex Fluehr (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) each delivered a bases-load RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0. One out later, the visitors plated a run on an error and junior Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) drove in another with a bases-loaded single to right. Another walk to Stewart forced in the sixth run of the inning and a Tenerelli sacrifice fly to center made it 7-0 Augustana after an inning and a half.

Mantucca accounted for the only Carthage run of the day, touching White for a leadoff homer to left in the bottom of the second.

Alex Newberry came on to start the third for the Red Men and Augustana got to him for a pair of runs on RBI singles from juniors Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) and Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa). Newberry escaped further damage by leaving the bases full of Vikings.

Stewart's leadoff double down the right field line kick started a three-run sixth for Augustana. Camalick, Gingerich and Fluehr came through with consecutive bases-loaded RBI singles to put the Vikings up 12-1.

Carthage loaded the bases with three singles in the seventh, but White coaxed a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Anthony Fortunato to end the game.

White scattered eight hits, but issued no base-on-balls and fanned three. In addition to Camalick's three hits, Van Duyne, Jasper, Fifer, Tenerelli, Gingerich and Fluehr each had a pair. Jasper, Camalick and Fluehr had two RBI apiece and Stewart, Tenerelli, Lenihan and Camalick each scored twice.

Augustana returns to Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field for a non-conference game with Cornell on Tuesday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m.
